Literature Text

By now you had no idea what day it was, what time it was nor how long you had been on this boat. It felt like months since you were tossed aboard. You were now accepting the small meals you received daily, learning they were not poisoned after a rat ate it and it still ran around your cell. It was lonely down in the brig, you were the only prisoner and the cell to your left actually had the bones of a human body. Your time on this dreadful boat was going swell.

You were aware that after your village they ransacked the Tunsington and Ranthsworth villages which made you depressed. Pirates are bloody thieves that are blinded by selfishness. But you only knew this because every night the Captain came down to talk to you for some reason... Ha, look at yourself, addressing him as Captain like you were scared of him. Wait…were you? You weren't sure. Every time he came down, your body got the chills and you had to keep your brave face on. But if the time came to it, you would fight him to the death if you had the chance. Well, would you? If you didn't listen to him, he would probably go and send his pirates to your village again.

"Dear _______________!" you heard the call of the pirate that had come to talk to you again. You hated it when he called you things like 'dear' and 'lady' like you two were lovers. He was the only one who didn't refer to you as prisoner like you requested. Honestly, you couldn't resent him more but his conversations with you made it feel a lot less lonely on that big ship. Kirkland had a tray of food in his hands which rather looked appetizing compared to prison food he gave you times before. He took a chain of keys out of his pocket, unlocking your cell door and going over to you. He dropped the tray down at your feet and went to unlock your wrists from the cuffs.

As you heard the cuffs click open you pulled your hands down and rubbed your sore wrists. You could make your escape, but where would you honestly go? Run out of the brig to the upper deck and be sent back down by a crew of ruthless pirates? You might as well just sit, eat and talk to Kirkland.

The captain sat down in front of you, smiling slyly like he was so slick for capturing a girl that gave herself up. "So, _______________, I would like to make a deal with you." A deal? Was it going to be a trap? You picked up the bread on your plate, biting into it as he continued on. "How would a lovely lady like you like to be part of my crew?" You almost choked on your bread. Was he serious? Does he do this all the time? Talk to his prisoners and just ask them to be part of his crew? That's pretty strange. You thought about this a little bit, not making eye contact at all.

"Come on, I don't have all day."

You realized you only had one option. Your selfishness pricked at you and you hated how dismal it was down there where you stayed. Oh, you couldn't resist, but a question made you curious. "Why?" you asked, looking up at him through narrowed, suspicious eyes. "I see potential in you my dear, you could be great at wielding a sword with a bit more practice." Practice? "And who would teach me?" That's when his sly grin became hugely scheming. "Why, me of course. I am the best at wielding a sword upon this vessel. So, what do you say?" You thought for about four more moments. "Fine, but know that I play by my own rules. Understand, Kirkland? And I will address you as Kirkland, no Captain involved." He frowned a little bit at your resentfulness. "Deal."

You got glances from your new crewmates as walked up onto the upper deck. There was a mix of many emotions in their faces. Anxiousness, confusedness, and anger all smacked upon their dirty faces as you were led by Kirkland to his quarters. You kind of stumbled a little bit after him since you had yet to gain your sea legs because all you did was sit in your cell for the past…time. Again, you lost track of that already.

You followed your new captain up some stairs to where that wheel-thing was... Pirate vocabulary is something that you really don't know. "My crew!" you hear Kirkland call out as you stood next to him. "Through these times, I have decided to bring our prisoner _______________ up from the brig to be one of you!" You listened as the crew below howl in fury. "Now, now, men, calm yourselves!" Kirkland commanded. "Trust me, we will not be disappointed in this one. Come on now, _______________, to my quarters." You paid no mine to the still-arguing men and followed the blonde into his own dwelling. It was neat but things – including you – shook about with the waves and things like multiple lamps that hung from the ceiling made a dingling sound.

"So, ready?" Kirkland asked, tossing you a sword. You grabbed it by its handle, pointing it at him. "Ready as I'll ever be." You replied with dreadfulness in your voice. If you were stumbling about, how would you be able to get a chance to beat him? Only one option was at your disposal, use the waves to your own advantage. You quickly scanned your area, a little cramped but you could make do, it would be testing your skills fairly well. Right now you were wishing your dad taught you how to swing a sword on a boat but he did the best he could. You lunged at your opponent, him doing the same.
